Sylvie Ledran, Philippe Maffre, and their son Hippolyte are farmer-vintners from the Gaillac region, based in Bois Moisset in the commune of Montans, on the right bank of the Tarn. The farm has been in the family since the 18th century: it is a polyculture operation, organically certified since 1995, with 15 hectares of vines planted on soils of sand, silt, and gravel (the famous "boulbènes") carried by the Tarn – a unique terroir in the Gaillac region, usually characterized by the clay-limestone soils of the left bank. Alongside the vineyards, the farm raises a herd of rustic cattle breeds (Lourdaise, Salers, Gasconne), cultivates lentils, soybeans, ancient grains for flour and bread, and also produces sunflower oil and grape juice. Always involved with the Confédération Paysanne, Sylvie and Philippe advocate for a different agricultural model: autonomy, biodiversity, and the transmission of farms. The winemaking is natural, without added sulfur, in concrete or stainless steel tanks, using indigenous Gaillac grape varieties – braucol (fer servadou), duras, prunelart, syrah, mauzac, len de l'œil, ondenc. The result: lively, crisp terroir wines with supple and delicate tannins, often labeled as Vin de France rather than AOP Gaillac, claiming complete freedom of expression.

Label & Natural Wines

Some labels can help us identify a natural wine. The AB label, for example, certifies organic farming. The Demeter label, for its part, guarantees biodynamics. There is also the 'Vin Méthode Nature' label, as well as 'Nature et Progrès', 'Les Vins SAINS', and many others.

Some estates choose to adhere to a single label, or even not to be labeled at all, even though their cultivation and winemaking method would allow it. In other words, there is no strict rule. It all depends on the winemaker's vision, his desires, and his convictions.

For us, it is important to meet all the people we work with in order to understand their working method and select the products that match our ideology.
